Mexico Emphasizes Sovereignty and Cooperation at UN General Assembly

At the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco emphasized Mexico’s commitment to upholding its national sovereignty while engaging in multilateral cooperation. In his first address to the assembly, Velasco underscored Mexico’s dedication to non-intervention and its ability to collaborate internationally without compromising its independence.

Speaking on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who was not in attendance, Velasco articulated Mexico’s approach to international relations, which balances collaboration with the preservation of sovereignty. He highlighted Mexico’s domestic policies, including efforts to reduce poverty and a reported decrease in homicide rates, linking these initiatives to the broader belief that sustainable peace is rooted in social development and the respect for nations’ self-determination and territorial integrity.

Velasco addressed international issues, expressing Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East and recognizing the rights of Palestine to exist within secure and recognized borders. Additionally, he reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo on Cuba and affirmed Mexico’s ongoing humanitarian support to the island nation.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Velasco engaged in bilateral talks with counterparts from several countries, including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. Discussions with Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares centered on enhancing bilateral relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid. Meanwhile, Mexico and Peru talked about reopening their embassies, a step following the restoration of diplomatic ties, with both nations committing to dialogue and mutual respect.

Additional meetings focused on fostering economic cooperation, strategic investment, and trade relations, along with discussions on UN reform and strengthening international multilateral institutions. Through these engagements, Mexico demonstrated its willingness to enhance international partnerships while maintaining its foundational principles of sovereignty and non-intervention.
