A devastating missile and drone attack by Russia on Kyiv early Monday resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals and left 46 others injured, including five children, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault launched overnight caused significant damage to residential areas throughout the capital. As rescue operations continued, authorities cautioned that the number of casualties might increase.
The attack wreaked havoc on Kyiv’s urban landscape, with emergency services reporting damage or destruction to at least 15 apartment buildings. Among the worst affected was a nine-story residential building in the Podilskyi district, where rescue teams were actively working to extricate people trapped beneath the rubble. In addition, another fatality was reported in the Bucha district, located northwest of the capital.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the execution of this “massive” strike, utilizing long-range missiles and drones. It stated that the targets included military, energy, and airfield infrastructure in Kyiv and various other regions of Ukraine. This attack follows closely on the heels of a previous significant strike that claimed at least 27 lives in Kyiv, representing one of the most lethal assaults on the city this year.
Despite the intense violence in the capital, conflict persists elsewhere in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed ongoing battles near the strategic town of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region. He refuted Russian assertions that their forces had successfully captured the town, indicating that fighting in the area continues.
