In a significant escalation, Ukraine has reportedly unleashed one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia, resulting in at least six fatalities and sparking a substantial fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. Russian authorities, including the Defence Ministry, claimed they intercepted a staggering 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour window, marking what they describe as the largest drone assault recorded in a single day. These figures, however, have yet to be independently confirmed.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, with 201 said to have been destroyed. The attacks claimed the life of one individual in the region. The Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, located roughly 25 miles south of central Moscow, was severely impacted by a massive blaze. The warehouse, spanning about 250,000 square meters, was heavily damaged and rendered inoperable, as noted by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian officials have accused several Wildberries facilities of being involved in military logistics, thus making them targets for such strikes.
Ukraine’s use of long-range drones marks a notable development in its military strategy, enabling it to target Russian military and economic assets located far from the frontline. Meanwhile, Russia has continued its heavy reliance on drones and missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. In a separate development, Russian strikes resulted in the deaths of at least seven people in Ukraine, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. Furthermore, a missile assault on Kyiv left six individuals injured and sparked fires, notably affecting a major book market where several businesses experienced total stock losses.
Adding to the tensions, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, reportedly downed a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, alleging that Moscow launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week alone. This intensification of hostilities underscores the growing use of long-range weaponry by both sides, raising the stakes with increased potential for casualties and damage well beyond the immediate conflict zones.
